Congratulations to Zhengyang Weng for winning 2016-17 GTSO Concerto Competition!! Zhengyang will perform Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto with the GTSO during FAll 2017.

Honorable Mention goes to Richard Li (Shawn, Clarinet Concerto).

OVERVIEW

The School of Music currently offers two orchestral ensembles: the Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra (GTSO, advanced), and Chamber Orchestra (intermediate). Both ensembles are under the direction of Professor Chaowen Ting, maintains a membership of approximately 70-90 students. The orchestra program also provides access to master classes, professional engagements, and recording opportunities. Members enjoy social aspects through informal dinners and parties. Students are encouraged to pre-register for orchestra and then audition. Semester dues are $15.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (GTSO)

The GTSO performs 4-6 concerts in an academic year. Concerts and repertoire expose participants to a variety of orchestral literature from the Classical through Contemporary periods, including operatic, popular and film music. Participation in the Orchestra broadens students’ skills and experience in performing, understanding and appreciation of great music. Recent works performed include Dvorak Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Serenade for Strings, and Mussorgsky / Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition.

The GTSO Rehearsals are 12:00-1:15 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, with occasional evening rehearsals between 6:15-7:35 pm in the fall and spring semesters.

 

CHAMBER ORCHSTR

Chamber Orchestra is the second orchestra at GT, performing 4 concerts in an academic year. The Chamber Orchestraproviding players a supportive environment in which players develop personal techniques and ensemble skills through practicing, rehearsing, and coaching. Players are explored to Classical symphonic repertoire as well as modern and pop music.

Chamber Orchestra meet from 1:30-2:45 pm on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the fall and spring semesters.

 

CONCERTO COMPETITION

The GTSO sponsors an annual Student Concerto Competition. All student vocalists and instrumentalists are invited to participate. The next competition will be held during Spring 2018. More information and the application will be available here.

Symphony Orchestra (MUSI 3611 SO) rehearsals are Tues/Thurs between 12:00 to 1:15 PM and occasional 6:15-7:35 PM in Couch 115 / West Village 175.

Chamber Orchestra (MUSI 3611 CS) rehearsals are Tues/Thurs between 1:30 to 2:45 PM in Couch 115 / West Village 175.

AUDITIONS

All students must audition to participate in the orchestra. Auditions are held during the first week of class in the fall semester. Spring audition will only be open to non-current orchestra members, those who wish to audition for ensemble placement, and those who wish to audition for GTSO principals.

Auditions for Fall 2017 will take place on August 22 (Tue) between 12:00-9:00pm in the Couch building.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Both orchestras meet as a class. Students can earn humanities credit under the course “Symphony Orchestra,” provided it meets the requirements listed in your Georgia Tech Catalog. ALL members should enroll for the class.

Academic conflicts (such as testing period) are common issues. Please contact the director and discuss your case. Once approved, please fill out the Orchestra Conflict Form during the second week of school when you know your schedule. Students are required to make up missed rehearsal time. The Director and the student will determine projects based on the student’s availability and interest. Various projects might include but not limited to: rehearsal and concert setup, librarian work, poster design and distribution, etc.
